Being an expat in Indonesia is not cheap; there are many expenses involved that Westerners usually do not take into account like: Education for children, health insurance, security factors finding a house, travel expenses etc.

Here are the most necessary key figures for the Jakarta area:

One child in private international school: USD 25.000 a year, this does not include field trips and other connected expenses.

Housing in Jakarta varies from USD 1.200 to 5.000 a month depending on area and quality of apartment/house.

Health insurance is around USD 3.000 a year per person depending on age and coverage.

Normal day to day living expenses for a family of 4 amounts to USD 3.000 to 4.000 monthly, food here is not cheap since Westerners usually only can eat limited types of the local food that means shopping in high-end supermarkets, where the price level is greater than in the West.

Tax in Indonesia varies from 10% to 30% depending on income level; they have a progressive tax percent.

Internet, utilities, television, etc. have the same price level as in the West; the Internet connections in Indonesia are at the same time very slow.

Work permits in Indonesia cost $ 1.200 + other yearly, see work permits.

Sending a family of 4 to Indonesia with a reasonable standard of living will set a company back minimum USD 175.000 yearly.

Sending a single person to Indonesia with a reasonable standard living will cost the company minimum USD 60.000 yearly.
